The highest-leverage fixes for an online store are boringly consistent. Serve images in modern formats (WebP or AVIF) and size them correctly, since the hero image is usually the LCP element. Index only the filter combinations that have real search demand, and stop search engines from crawling the rest. Faceted navigation, the filters for size, colour, price, and brand, is the single most common crawl-budget killer on e-commerce sites, and getting it wrong quietly buries your good pages.

Google is explicit that filtered URLs can create a near-infinite crawl space and warns that they can be expensive to crawl. The goal is not to block everything. It is to treat facets as a portfolio: keep the ones people search for, suppress the ones they don’t.

The fix hierarchy, in order of preference:

  • AJAX filtering with no crawlable facet links. The cleanest option. Shoppers get the filtering experience, but no new URLs are created for search engines to chase. This eliminates the crawl problem at the source.
  • Self-referencing canonicals on facets worth indexing. For a high-demand combination like “red leather sofas,” give it a clean, readable URL, unique copy, and a self-referencing canonical, then include it in your sitemap.
  • Canonical to the parent category for filtered views with no unique search value. This consolidates link equity while the page still works for users.
  • Meta robots noindex for multi-select and price-range filters that rarely have demand. Keep them crawlable so Google can see the noindex, rather than blocking in robots.txt, which prevents Google from ever reading the directive.

One caveat worth stating plainly, from Google’s own ecommerce URL guidance: canonical tags are a hint, not a command. Google can ignore a canonical if the filtered page differs a lot or is heavily internally linked. Only AJAX without crawlable links, or a genuine 404, is a hard block. Plan accordingly, and do not assume a canonical alone will keep 10,000 filter URLs out of the index.
